The Tamarind was at the earliest stage of spalting (a stage of decomposition) where the fungus left webs of black line spalt. The mill was finished to keep the dramatic ‘black-on-white’ finish intact. Oil and wax would smear it, so this got a number of coats of a crystal clear water based acrylic finish.
The style of the ‘muffin top’ is new. In this contemporary line of my peppermills I noticed the standard ‘peaked’ top design tended to obscure really interesting wood features in the end grain. So this ‘muffin top’ was designed to let that beautiful end grain shine through.
